Everything you need to know about teaching private swim lessons in AQUA S.T.A.R. as an instructor

AQUA S.T.A.R. connects certified swimming instructors with clients seeking private lessons at their convenience. Instructors travel to private residences or nearby condos/apartments, offering personalized swim instruction on flexible schedules.

If clients do not have private swim pool, they can come to one of are available shared pool location if available nearby your location and allow our swim instructor to provide top service private swim lessons for you.

NO. You engage as an independent contractor under BC’s Employment Standards Act §1(1). This means:

  • You operate your own swim instruction business

  • We are your client, not your employer

  • Key proof: You control your schedule, methods, and tools

per BC law and your contract (§7.7), you:

  • Control when/where/how you teach

  • Bear financial risk (travel costs, taxes, equipment)

  • Can work for competitors simultaneously

AQUA S.T.A.R. offers instructors the flexibility to set prices and availability, along with dedicated booking and profile pages. As a contractor, you DO NOT RECEIVE:

    Per BC ESA §1(1), these apply only to employees



BC’s Employment Standards Branch DOES NOT COVER independent contractors. By joining:

  • You sign an Independent Contractor Acknowledgment (attached to contract)

  • You confirm understanding that ESA protections don’t apply

To comply with BC law (§7.7), we must clarify:

  • You pay 100% of your taxes (we never deduct)

  • You have no employee rights under:
    • Employment Standards Act
    • Workers Compensation Act
    • Canada Labour Code

Do not sign our agreement. BC courts require mutual understanding of contractor status

AQUA S.T.A.R. Instructors’ payout is anywhere between:

  • 30-minute lesson: $14.00 – $52.00 
  • 1-hour lesson: $27.00 – $92.00

This does not include other bonuses and benefits.

To join AQUA S.T.A.R. as an instructor, individuals must hold a valid teaching certificate, have a minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience, possess current First Aid CPR & AED certification, pass an online background check, and be at least 18 years old.

Signing up is free, and after you finish filling out the application, the second step of the hiring session will be announced. 

AQUA S.T.A.R. recognizes certifications affiliated with the Canadian Red Cross or the Lifesaving Society for swim instruction. While additional certifications may enhance your profile, instructors must maintain current Water Safety Instructor certification from either organization to continue teaching with AQUA S.T.A.R. All certifications must be kept up to date to ensure competence in instruction.

Each AQUA S.T.A.R. reservation ensures a either 30-minute or 1-hour instruction with the instructor. Lessons include goal-setting, practice sessions, and personalized feedback. Instructors arrive early for convenience and to allow time for changing and settling in before the lesson begins.

Differentiate yourself by adding credentials and expertise to your profile. AQUA S.T.A.R. employs certified instructors proficient in swimming and water safety.

Titles like Lifeguard, Swimming Instructor, Yoga Teacher, or others are recommended. Additionally, highlight expertise areas like language fluency and personality traits to enhance your profile.

To maintain teaching quality and student progress, we require a minimum one-hour duration for all lessons. However, parents can opt to split the lesson with a friend if concerned about their child’s endurance.

Clients are required to bring a friend or family member for the swim before subscribing to a plan or booking individual lessons. If not, inform us beforehand. The instructor may decline the extra swimmer if the appointment shows only one participant.

We can only accommodate a maximum of two students per lesson. If additional swimmers arrive, they’ll need to take turns or divide the time. Please inform your client about this limitation before the lesson.

If the water is tolerably cold, finish the lesson and notify management for future adjustments. No refund or credit will be issued for the unused portion. In extreme cases, cancel the class immediately, inform the client of the refund, and report the issue to management.

Payment Summary & Payout Schedule

  1. Pay Periods
    a. Period 1: 1st – 15th of each month
    b. Period 2: 16th – last day of each month

  2. Statement Issuance
    Within 3–5 business days following the close of each pay period, Aquastar Swim Lessons Ltd. will compile a Payment Summary detailing:

    • Lessons taught

    • Applicable deductions

    • Net earnings due

  3. Review & Dispute Process
    Upon receipt of your Payment Summary, you have 48 hours to notify us in writing of any discrepancies. If no dispute is received within that timeframe, the Summary will be deemed accurate and final.

  4. Funds Disbursement
    Subject to Section 3, funds will be directly deposited into your designated bank account within 24–36 hours after the dispute window closes.

  5. Bonuses
    If you participate in any bonus or incentive program, those amounts will be calculated monthly and disbursed alongside your next regular payout following program eligibility confirmation.


 

Example Timeline

  • July 1–15 period ends → July 16–20: Statement issued

  • July 20–22: Dispute window (48 hours)

  • July 22–23: Funds deposited

This schedule ensures timely, transparent compensation for all services rendered.

Basic contact details are required, along with a blank direct deposit form, which you can obtain for free from your bank. Once you have it, please send it to info@aquastarcanada.com.

Independent instructors may need to fill out a T2125, Statement of Business or Professional Activities, if they prepare their own taxes. AQUA S.T.A.R. instructors don’t receive T4s, as they’re neither employees nor independent contractors. It’s crucial to report sales income and losses to the Canada Revenue Agency when filing taxes.

AQUA S.T.A.R. sends instructors email and text message alerts whenever a lesson is scheduled, cancelled, or postponed. Upon scheduling, you’ll receive a confirmation email and a text message with basic information about your next lesson.

The day before your scheduled lessons, a reminder email with your students’ names will be sent. We recommend using calendar software to keep track of your timetable and lessons.

If a client cancels a lesson, they should do so through our chat system messenger and access their account to make the necessary changes.

Instructors should avoid administrative tasks like scheduling or rescheduling classes for their clients to prevent misunderstandings. The website provides information on how to cancel and get a refund.

If you need to cancel a scheduled lesson, please send an email to our management team at least 72 hours (3 days) in advance to inform us that you won’t be able to teach.
